Managers Update

An update from joint managers Jon Underwood and Neil Baker

10/10/13

There is a huge belief within the dressing room that we can challenge for promotion and this remains very much the focus.

Following a disappointing start to the season we had a great month in September where we picked up 10 points out of a possible 12 taking us to within touching distance of the play-off places.

This run started with a fantastic 4-0 win at Rugby who as many will know came 2nd last season only for them to lose in the play-off final. As expected, Rugby are again this season up in a play-off position. Eddie Smith quite rightly took the plaudits that day with all 4 goals but it was a really strong team performance. I think most would agree that it was a great game and we left there with a real feeling that we may just have turned a corner in our season.

Two home wins followed in the space for 4 days and the goals continued to flow. We beat an in-form and previously unbeaten Barton Rovers side 4-0 at home in an unexpected one-sided game and then followed this up with a slightly less convincing 4-2 win against struggling Ashford. We played some great football going forward that night but defensively we were not quite as sound leading to a few nervy moments. Still we deserved the win and were delighted to get our third win in a row.

At Egham, the winning run came to end (but only just) where we fought out a 2-2 draw. The game was relatively even until the closing stages where we actually had 3 great chances to win the game, all in the 7 minutes of injury time that the referee played. At the final whistle however we had to settle for a point which at least kept our unbeaten run going.

We were obviously very disappointed to go out of the FA Cup at the beginning of the month as we had high hopes of a run in that competition. We narrowly lost out in the replay to a decent Cirencester side who have gone on to do well in both the league and the cup. Infact they have just been awarded team of the month by the League. The FA Trophy now becomes even more important and we hope to bring you good news on that front next month.

August and September was a terrible time for us in terms of injuries but fingers crossed the situation now appears to be improving. We are prepared for continuing our positive run in the league which will keep us within striking distance of the top sides as we reach Christmas. There is a huge belief within the dressing room that we can challenge for promotion and this remains very much the focus.
