Managers' Update

An update from joint managers Jon Underwood and Neil Baker.

It won't be easy, but we have the belief that we can do it and it's going to be great to be involved in such an exciting end to the season!

The last three months of this season are going to be very interesting indeed with currently nine teams who, in our opinion have a realistic chance of making the end of season top 5.

It looks like Dunstable and Rugby will certainly take two of those places - leaving the remaining seven sides to battle for the other three play-off positions. We currently sit in third with points on the board but everyone else below us has games in hand - so we are going to need to keep winning on a regular basis if we are to stay in the pack. It won't be easy, but we have the belief that we can do it and it's going to be great to be involved in such an exciting end to the season!

The January month began with the short trip to last season's champions Burnham in the Red Insure cup. The game saw a debut for new signing Leigh Rumbold and second starts for brothers Jake and Ryan Parsons who had both recently joined. We also signed new striker Adam Cornell on the night so it has been a real period of change within the changing room but one that we feel has been crucial to our upturn in fortunes. After an entertaining 3-3 draw we unfortunately lost on penalties - special mention must however go to 16 year old keeper Matt Bonnett who was outstanding on the night and also a great debut from 'Rummy' who scored our second goal.

After the Burnham game we played Marlow away. In a hard-fought game we bounced back from the disappointment of conceding an incredibly unlucky own goal and a very 'soft' penalty to share the points in a 2-2 draw. After three league defeats in a row this felt like a bit of a turning point and we couldn't fault the team’s effort and commitment on the day.

A much-needed win came at home game against Chalfont in what could only be described as 'a game of two halves'. I have to say we were pretty poor in the first half; however having fallen behind to a soft goal, Adam Cornell, on his debut, scored a poacher's goal to send us in level at half time. Suffice to say there were some pretty honest and strong conversations at half time in the dressing room and to the lads credit we came out a different team in the second half. An early goal certainly helped to settle us and we ran out 5-1 winners, playing some great football in the process.

Our last game in January was a very tough one away at play-off rivals Northwood who are a dangerous side full of pace and until that game they hadn't been beaten at their place in the league since the end of September. The game was played at a frantic pace and there was very little between the sides but our two strikers Eddie Smith (returning at last from a long lay-off) and Adam Cornell got the vital goals in the first half. We defended brilliantly as a team in the second half with keeper Jake Somerville making some outstanding saves.

One of the reasons behind our recent good form has definitely been the strength of the squad and the fact that almost everyone is fully fit now. It makes such a difference to be able to name a strong fit bench, something we just couldn't manage in December, and we now have real competition for places and options to make positive changes during the game if we need to.
