Managers' Update

An update from joint managers Jon Underwood and Neil Baker.

04/03/14

February proved to be a big month for us, and if we can continue to take one game at a time, anything is possible.

Managers Jon Underwood and Neil Baker

February has been a very positive month for us!

We came into the month off the back of two very important wins against Northwood and Chalfont St Peter, aware that if we had any hopes of making the play offs then this form would need to continue.

First up was a home tie against Aylesbury FC, a side littered with Slough connections, as last season’s manager Steve Bateman had recently taken over the reins and recruited a number of ex Slough Town players. This led to an interesting evening, however in cold and wet conditions our lads were very professional and ended up 2-0 victors with Warren Harris getting a brace for the first time this season.

We were now beginning to find our form, and you could sense that confidence was flooding back and the training ground was a good place to be. Unfortunately the game on the following Saturday against North Greenford was called off, so instead of training we decided we would get everyone together for a team bonding day, plus a few drinks. This included all the back room staff, and proved to be an excellent day/evening and one we feel has made a positive contribution to morale within the team.

Our next game was Aylesbury United on the Saturday, and after a lively circuits session at Farnham Park on the Tuesday and a football session on the Thursday, we took to the field with only one change from the side that had beaten Aylesbury FC, with Scott Harris coming in for Adam Cornell up front. The match itself was a very lively and entertaining game where we eventually ran out 5-3 winners. The result however was always in the balance with the game only being settled in the final minutes when their keeper went up for a corner at 4-3. From the corner we cleared our lines allowing Eddie Smith, under immense pressure, to coolly slot home into an empty net with the Aylesbury keeper frantically trying to get back. Our scorers were Eddie Smith 2, Scott Harris 1, Johnnie Dyer 1, and Jamie McClurg 1.

This may prove to be a big three points, as Aylesbury Utd are a strong team and have subsequently taken points off Beaconsfield and Rugby - they will no doubt take points off others.

One week later we prepared ourselves for what most described as our biggest game of the season to date, against many people’s favourites to win the league, Dunstable Town. With Dunstable having lost their previous three games and having strengthened their squad during the week, we knew this would be a very difficult game. As it turned out we put in a thoroughly professional and strong performance and won the game 4-0 with another 2 goals from Eddie, 1 from Scott Harris and 1 from Ryan Parsons (his first for the club). Interestingly we were helped a little on the way with the dismissal of ex Slough defender Kyle Anthony, and whilst some might say it may have been a bit harsh, sometimes things in football do even themselves out. Many will remember that we had a player sent off earlier in the season at Dunstable for what many supporters (including a few Dunstable supporters!) described as a ‘gross miscarriage of justice!’

So… February proved to be a big month for us, and if we can continue to take one game at a time, anything is possible.

Up the Rebels!
