Slough Town find themselves struggling near the bottom of the Isthmian League without a win in four games after losing to an 86th minute goal at Staines on Tuesday.

Angry manager Joe Arpino claimed afterwards that Slough had been robbed by a dubious decision by referee D. Cullen just before Staines scored. Paul Lee found himself clean through the Staines defence but the referee whistled for offside - despite the fact his linesman kept his flag down. Even the Staines players thought Lee was onside.

It was a frustrating night for Lee who received a lot of heavy knocks but was booked when he made physical contact himself. Mr. Arpino declared: "Lee was never offside and Trevor Porter was fouled when they scored. It was sickening."

But although Slough showed a lot of fight, they lacked authority in both midfield and attack where Somers and Russell were below par. Slough survived some early Staines pressure with the help of a fine save by Porter from Hymes.

When the visitors forced their way back into the game Staines resorted to brute force to stop them. O'Sullivan pulled back Russell and Shaw then hacked down Lee. This gave Slough the opportunity to show off their well rehearsed free-kick move. But after the ball had been tapped sideways by first Cooke and then Davies, Beyer blasted it over.

Slough were gaining in confidence and in the 37th minute they almost took the lead. Russell centred from the right and Cooke's curling shot clipped the far post. In the second half it was Slough's turn to have a lucky escape. Porter allowed Brown's hopefully hit high ball to go over his head but Tripp cleared off the line.

Rowlands then sold a dummy to the Slough defence by letting the ball run to Waugh, but his shot hit Porter and rolled the wrong side of the post.

Porter, who had one of his rare off days, was at fault when Staines scored in the 86th minute. He failed to punch away a long, high free kick from O'Sullivan as James challenged him, and the ball fell perfectly for John Love to nod in.
