THREE second half goals helped Slough Town overcome the challenge of Hellenic League Newbury in the second round of the Berks & Bucks Cup at Faraday Road on Wednesday evening.
However it took the Rebels until well into the second half to break down a resolute Newbury defence, in which goalkeeper Pat Mooney made several fine saves.
While Slough struggled desperately to put their game together, the Newbury forwards rarely worried the Rebels' defence and Richard Teale had only one real shot to save in the entire match.
After Eggie James, Micky Kiely and Eric Young had all gone close in the first half, Slough finally broke the deadlock after 59 minutes.
A corner from Barry Friend, on the left, was headed into his own net by Charley Penny while under pressure from Young.
After 85 minutes Terry Reardon, on for James, almost increased the lead, but one minute later Pat Morrissey did score a second goal from close range.
Within four minutes Kiely added a third after a fine shot from Dave Russell, on the edge of the penalty area, was pushed into the Slough striker's path by Mooney.
