"A GAME of no importance", was how one supporter summed up the game.

At 4.45 not many people would have disagreed, as Slough lumbered towards the end of a season that promised so much but delivered so little, just about sure of Conference football again next season.

It was eight minutes before the first attack by either side, a speculative shot by Bimson from twenty five yards which Watkiss tipped over for a corner.

From the resulting corner Anderson headed out to the edge of the box where Bimson fired low past Watkiss to open the scoring, much to the delight of the travelling fans.

Direct from the kick off Slough moved forward and a good turn and volley by Fielder struck the upright with the keeper well beaten.

Slough began to pepper the box with crosses but Farrelly, who had a good afternoon between the posts, cut them out easily. Without McKinnon who was injured Slough appear to have no one to work on this kind of cross.

While Slough had most of the possession The Silkmen looked dangerous on the break with Doherty and Ellis both going close with long range efforts.

On the half hour a Macclesfield corner was turned towards his own goal by Knight, Watkiss pulled off a fine save.

At the other end Hickey shot just over for the Rebels and just before half time a good tackle by Scott and a neat one two saw him shoot powerfully past the keeper only to find the side netting.

The second half began much the same as the first with neither side showing any shape.

With a half hour to go sloppy defensive work by Hill let in Clayton but Watkiss held the cross well with Doherty looming to head in.

Stanley for the third game running was Slough's only threat to the opposition's goal, having a flicked header cleared off the line by Bimson.

Then a Scott low drive was only turned aside by the keeper but no Slough player was on hand to finish. From the clearance the ball bounced about in Slough's area finally running clear to Bimson for a carbon copy of his first strike to make it two nil.

Slough now began to show a little urgency and a fine cross by Hickey was headed down by Stanley but Farrelly made a superb save.

Doherty then had a penalty appeal turned down but made amends later when man of the match Bimson's cross was fumbled by Watkiss for Doherty to slot into an empty net.

With a three nil lead Macclesfield played keep ball to play out time with only ten minutes to go.

Then almost certainly the substitution of the day with former Bolton keeper Zelegm coming on at centre forward.

As the final whistle sounded most thoughts turned to what the club will do about rebuilding the damaged moral and battered pride of the Rebels for the beginning of Slough's third Conference season.
