Slough Town were hit by two-goal Paul Coombes, the ex-Aldershot and Basingstoke striker, with a goal in each half at Purfleet on Tuesday night.

It was a game in which head coach Steve Browne changed his team around from Saturday, giving different players a run out.

Browne himself and Aaron Patton started the game in midfield in place of Paul Barrowcliff and Dave Rainford.

The Rebels opened brightly with attacks down either flank, with Junior Haynes in particular getting the better of his full back and putting in one or two dangerous crosses.

The first goal came midway through the half when a corner was met on the near post and flicked on to the far post where Coombes was virtually unmarked to bundle the ball over the line.

Slough continued to build up attacks but lacked domination in midfield. Patton went off at half time being not very effective as opposed to his lively performance on Saturday and Barrowcliff replaced him.

Rebels had plenty of possession in the second half but failed to find the finishing touch.

Marcus Richardson found himself heavily marked and Slough did not create the chances to score.

It was rather against the run of play that Coombes doubled his and Purfleet tally when he picked up a ball 30 yards out and blasted a shot past the helpless Honey.
