Essex side Grays Athletic were brushed aside as Rebels picked up their second win of the season.

Slough fielded a very similar side to the one which faced Gravesend on Saturday, with the only change being Haynes coming in to replace Markman upfront.

The game started brightly for Slough as they created two early chances, both falling to new summer signings. The first chance came from a cross from Haynes which was met by the run of Allen, whose header went narrowly wide of Tucker's left hand post.

Four minutes later, a Hawthorne corner fell to the back post where a lunge by McPherson directed the ball goal bound but was well cleared off the line. From the resultant corner, another back post cross fell to Townley in space, but his volleyed attempt went well over.

With 20 minutes played, Slough took the lead through Mark Hawthorne - the cultured midfielder's low strike ultimately proving to be enough.

Slough's best piece of play in the half came after 34 minutes. Some good interplay and neat passing involving Allen, Hawthorne and Townley released Haynes, but a great recovering tackle by Dickinson was mopped up by Tucker in the Grays goal.

Grays' best chance of the half came when O'Sullivan managed to turn Timothy on the edge of the Slough box, but his turn and shot went straight at Mautone.

Another good Slough move on the stroke of half time, saw Marshall, Haynes and Timothy combine to release Timothy down the right. His cross managed to avoid the defence but fell just behind Marshall, but his half contact with the shot still required a very good save low down from Tucker.

Immediately from the kick off Grays broke through the Slough defence and Townley was adjudged to have pulled down a Grays striker in the area. The referee had no choice but to award Grays a penalty. Hazel tried to place his shot high to Mautone's left, but his shot went over the Slough bar.

This seemed to give Slough a bit of a kick into action and Allen began to look lively down the right hand side. Going past his man cutting inside him, a long range effort went narrowly wide. Shortly after a cross from Allen just missed a late Timothy run into the box.

With the Slough defence in a dominant mood it was a tough evening for the strike duo of Grays. Hazel managed to create himself a chance on the edge of the area though, but was quickly closed and saw his effort blocked. Moments after, a free kick was crossed in from the left wing by Nesling, cleared to the edge of the box by Slough but fell nicely for Dickinson who saw his effort deflected away for a corner.

Slough continued to pressure the Grays defence and it nearly paid off after 58 minutes. Haynes picked up a loose ball from Taylor and managed to break clear but was well tracked by Dickinson who managed to block Haynes's shot.

Grays' next chance fell to their substitute but was well tracked by McPherson, who pulled off a good tackle in the area to prevent the striker getting a shot in.

In the latter stages of the second half, which included seven minutes of injury time, Slough were still managing to keep the upper hand, just. Late chances fell to Timothy and McPherson, but Grays had a late chance to equalise when a good break down and cross from the left wing was met by the head of Hazel, but he could not make enough contact to direct it goalwards.
