Goals in either half from strikers Simon Martin and Sean Sonner gave Slough a 2-0 victory against Soham Town Rangers.

Having suffered some disappointing results of late, it was a very welcome three points for Slough, who were made to work harder for the points by the visitors, having won the reverse fixture comfortably 2-0 in Suffolk earlier in the season.

Both sides traded early strikes at goal through Edgeworth and Ogbonna, and Slough forced a number of early corners before taking the lead in the eighth minute. Nathan Bowden-Haase powered a header towards goal, and the ball struck Soham defender Scott Carter, giving Bowden-Haase a second bite of the cherry. His shot was back heeled neatly into the net by Simon Martin, taking his tally to ten for the season.

Slough kept the pressure on with efforts from Dwain Clarke, who fired straight at Chamberlain from distance, before the keeper made a great save at full stretch to deny Sinclair, after a fine 40-yard run.

More last-ditch defending also denied Martin another goal at the crucial moment, after the Slough striker had robbed Andy Coleman on the edge of the area.

After weathering the storm, Soham came into the match and had the better of the attacking play in the quarter of an hour leading up to half-time. Perks was called into action to make a low save from Callum Reed, and soon after had to stretch to tip Ogbonna’s 25-yard free kick over the bar.

Just before the break, Michael Simpson went closer still, heading Napier’s cross onto the roof of the bar and over.

Early into the second half, Chamberlain tipped a Paul Edgeworth drive past the post before Slough almost lost their slender lead, but Perks turned Ogbonna’s effort behind.

Midway through the half, the match was delayed whilst a replacement official was sought after the referee pulled up with an injury. Slough Town official Kevin Merryweather took the flag, and when play resumed, both sides made changes with Soham introducing striker Charles Libam and Slough bringing on the lively Sean Sonner.

And it was Steve Bateman’s change that proved to be the more effective, as Slough doubled their lead in the 74th minute. A long ball from Ricky Perks was played to Sonner, who headed past a stranded Chamberlain from the edge of the penalty area, having only been on the field for two minutes.

Sonner was then instrumental in setting up a chance for Steve Sinclair, but the winger hit the side netting from an angle.

Soham were not yet finished as an attacking threat though, and Ogbonna went close again, heading wide after a deflected shot flew in his direction, before having another effort well saved by Perks.

However Slough managed to hold on to the lead and maintain a healthy position in the battle for a playoff spot, with another crucial game against Leighton to come in midweek.
