An Ollie Burgess goal in second half stoppage time was not enough to stop league new-boys Guildford City inflicting defeat on Slough at Holloways Park.
Guildford, the Combined Counties Premier Division champions, employed a five man midfield, which proved very difficult to break down. Slough were unable to settle on the ball and gave the ball away cheaply on numerous occasions.
Austin Gacheru forced stand-in goalkeeper Simon Grant into a fine save with a close range shot, which was parried over the bar. Slough’s first real chance was spurned by Dom Rhone, who did well to beat his marker and find space for a shot, but Antony Hall saved easily.
Soon after, Slough had a big penalty appeal waved away when Guildford full-back Elvis Defreitas made a last ditch sliding tackle which started just outside the penalty box. It was a decision which could have gone the other way, but nothing came of the free kick.
Slough upped the tempo at the end of the half, but the visitors had had the better chances. After a goalless first period, Tommy Tydeman put the visitors in front on 57 minutes with a piledriver into the top corner from outside the box which Grant could not reach.
Gacheru was then unlucky not to score from two efforts well saved by Grant again. Ollie Burgess and Stuart Swift replaced Rhone and Adam Logie, who seemed ineffective against Guildford’s well-organised midfield, but the visitors added a second goal with 13 minutes remaining. Dan Moody controlled a pass from Ben Rayner very well and touched the ball past Grant before scoring with a controlled finish from a difficult angle.
Ben Abbey was thrown on in the final few minutes and Burgess headed in from Sean Sonner's cross two minutes into stoppage time, but a frustrated Slough could not find an equaliser in the little time that remained.
