A controversial late penalty denied Slough a vital win against Taunton as both sides looked to secure safety in the South & West division.
With the Rebels, playing in pink shirts in aid of Breast Cancer Research, up against fellow strugglers Taunton, this match was always likely to be a close affair and so it proved in the end, despite the visitors having much the better of the chances in the first half.
Jamie Jackson had to be alert to turn away a header from Charlie Welch, before Alexis Piper, confusingly wearing a number 12 shirt, spurned three great chances. The striker blazed over when played in on goal, before a heavy touch allowed Jackson to collect the ball when he was played in again with a great pass.
Piper then headed another gilt-edged chance over the bar from a right wing cross before Slough started to get back into the game, with Sealey heading well wide and Bubb blasting well over from 15 yards.
After the break, Piper missed another sitter from six yards before eventually being replaced.
A few chances arrived for Slough, as Sinclair’s teasing cross was just missed by Jordan in the middle and Edwards headed a free kick over the bar, as the tide began to turn.
Slough had upped their game and looked to make Taunton pay for their profligacy as they took the lead in the 75th minute. Bubb’s curling cross from the left side of the box was glanced in by Jordan, who got the faintest of touches to divert the ball into the bottom corner.
The lead lasted just a matter of minutes though, as Nick McCootie drilled the ball into the bottom corner through a crowd from the edge of the box.
In a thrilling finale, Matthew Platt looked to have settled matters with five minutes to go as he headed in a fine cross from the impressive Tyron Sealey for his 18th goal of the season. But at the other end, there was controversy as a shot struck Ryan Fenton’s arm, with the defender able to do very little about it, and a penalty was awarded – just seconds after Sealey was clearly pushed off the ball on the other side of the penalty area.
After Fenton, Harper and Evans were all booked for Slough in the arguments that followed, Twaine Plummer sent Jackson the wrong way from the spot to rescue a deserved point for Taunton as their fight to avoid the drop continued.
