Date: 17-11-2011 | Competition: League Cup
Slough Town U18s exited the ACFYL League Cup after a dramatic 4-3 defeat by Harefield United after extra time.
This was a game that Jamal de Brito Richmond, the Slough keeper, will remember for some time.
Slough made an electric start to the match, going 2-0 up inside the first three minutes of the game. Harefield conceded an own goal after Samuel Muzinga's pressure on the full back with just 30 seconds played.
Two minutes later, Jerome Booth struck again to double the lead.
Then Slough proceeded to self destruct, with passes going astray and panicked defending, which allowed Harefield to get going and get on top.
The visitors got the all important goal before half time by way of a penalty given away by Richmond, whose clumsy challenge brought down the Harefield striker, who stepped up and converted the penalty.
In the second half, Slough were forced to defend deeper and deeper into their own half and was inevitable that Harefield would score again.
And the visitors did grab a deserved equaliser on 70 minutes - and then three minutes later, took the lead for the first time in the match, having turned around the early 2-0 deficit.
As Slough heads dropped, the game looked to be slipping away from the Rebels, but with just seconds remaining, Slough were award a free kick 25 yards out.
All the Slough players, including goalkeeper Richmond, went forward to join the attack. Gary Andrews sent in the free kick, and the Harefield keeper fumbled the cross. Panic followed, as the ball hit a defender and then the post - but Richmond managed to get a toe onto the ball and the ball ended up in the back of the net in dramatic circumstances.
In extra time, the first period was an end-to-end affair with both teams going close to getting the winning goal.
The second period began with Slough on the back foot. Another mix up with Richmond and Gary Andrews in the penalty area led to the winning Harefield goal.
Richmond called for a ball and completely missed it, clattering into a Harefield player, and conceding another penalty in the process. This time the referee had no option but to send Richmond off, and replacement keeper James Hawtree was brought on at the expense of a defender.
Amazingly, when the penalty was finally taken, Hawtree magaged to save the penalty, but the striker quickly followed up to score, ultimately giving his side a deserved 4-3 victory.
Slough huffed and puffed for the remainder of the match, but the ten men had little time to regroup and find a response.
