Eastleigh: Preview and matchday arrangements

Neil Baker provides an update ahead of the Rebels' opening game of pre-season tomorrow evening.

08/07/19

Tomorrow we welcome National League side Eastleigh in what is a very tough opening game for our lads.

We welcome Ben Strevens, Jason Bristow and their side to Arbour Park, and wish them the best for the season ahead.

We have so far had three training sessions and are generally pleased with what we have seen.

In terms of our attitude to pre-season, it seems to get a bit more relaxed each season, and the reason is players tend to look after themselves so much in the off-season, it therefore does not take them long to get back up to speed.

Importantly we will try a number of things in pre-season this year that we might not otherwise get the chance to do - this might be to play players out of position, look at trialists, try different formations, and even with things like set-pieces, work on a couple per game so that we can get a bit more familiarity with them. We might even get to a point that we go down to 10 men in a game to replicate having a player sent off.

Of course we would still like to win games, and the way we are as a team in terms of competitiveness we will still try to do this, however in reality we are not going to worry about the results.

We welcome the new signings in Max Worsfold and Ryan Bird, and we hope to add a third to this after the game (he will play a part on Tuesday). We also have a couple of trialists playing in Joe Grant and Adam Richards.

Joe, who previously played for us a few years ago when he was very young, has been developing very well and comes in off the back of an excellent season with Bracknell Town. He can play in a wide or forward position. We will also look at Adam, who is a local lad and was recently playing at Marlow last season. He is either a centre half or full back.

We will have Sam Togwell missing the next two games as he is away on holiday, whilst Manny Williams picked up a slight toe injury and will probably just train, Josh Jackman will be absent due to a adductor issue that might mean he misses a few weeks of pre-season, and Simon Dunn will miss the game due to illness.

Certain players will miss various parts of the pre-season campaign, and in reality at this stage we just tell them that getting in the side for the first game of the season is down to them, and therefore the more they miss in terms of games and training sessions the harder it will be for them.

It will be great to see everyone again as we start our preparations for the 2019/2020 season.

Squad from: Jack Turner, Sean Fraser, George Wells, Adam Richards, Guy Hollis, Mark Nisbet, Warren Harris, Max Worsfold, Joe Grant, TBC, Lee Togwell, Simon Dunn, Matthew Lench, Ryan Bird, Dan Roberts, Ben Harris and Francis Amartey.

** The turnstiles will open at 18:30, with the upstairs bar and kitchen open from the same time. Free parking will be available at Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy and also at Arbour Park (after 19:15).
