Preview: Braintree Town

A look ahead to the visit of Braintree Town to Arbour Park tomorrow.

24/11/23

Next up for Slough Town is another home clash at Arbour Park this Saturday, as the Rebels face Braintree Town in what will surely be a testing National League South fixture, writes Freddie Gatrell.

The Essex-based outfit have had a strong campaign thus far, comfortably sitting amongst the promotion places in 6th place with 30 points and only three points off 2nd placed Aveley. The Iron have a record to be proud of, consisting of 8 wins, 6 draws and 5 losses after 19 games played. Regardless of their strong league position, in recent weeks Braintree have been unable to string together their victories, with losses against Eastbourne Borough in the league and Gloucester City in the FA Trophy, who are currently rock bottom of the National League North. Despite the recent cup upset, Braintree will remain a formidable opponent for Scott Davies’ Rebels, who are also in a rich spell of form, with back-to-back wins against Farnborough and Havant & Waterlooville inviting the prospect of a hotly contested match.

Braintree, under the stewardship of 35-year-old manager Angelo Harrop, have become a force to be reckoned with over the last two seasons. Harrop, who joined the club from AFC Sudbury in May 2022, has already led his side to a play-off finish in his debut season, finishing the campaign in 7th place, accumulating 74 points in the process. Since extending his contract this season, Harrop will be hoping he can continue his side’s resurgent success and propel them back into the National League.

Harrop’s side have demonstrated no issues finding the back of the net, with goals flowing freely all season. The danger-man for Saturday’s clash is undoubtably Aaron Blair, with the 23-year-old striker scoring goals at a regular rate in recent weeks including a memorable performance on Tuesday night against Dartford - single-handedly winning all three points for his side thanks to a second half brace.

Having spent much of his early career at Dagenham & Redbridge, the young striker was loaned out numerous times before signing permanently for Braintree in October this year. Blair has proven an early success, having gone on to net 7 goals in 13 games, averaging a goal every 158 minutes in his current form. Scott Davies’ rotated defence will have to be at their brilliant best to keep the forward at bay and prevent any improvements to this goalscoring record this Saturday.

The match will kick off at 3pm at Arbour Park this Saturday, with live match commentary available courtesy of Rebels Radio and match updates available on all official club social media channels.
