Preview: Bath City

A look ahead to tomorrow night's game at Bath City.

08/01/24

Next up for Slough Town is an away trip to Bath City in the Vanarama National League South on Tuesday night, as written by Freddie Gatrell.

Bath City are flying high this season and will prove a formidable outfit for Scott Davies’ men. Currently residing in 6th place in the table with 41 points and only 5 points behind second-placed Hampton & Richmond, the Romans have a league record to be proud of, boasting 11 wins, 8 draws, and 7 defeats to their name. In their most recent match, Bath lost away to table-toppers Yeovil Town with a comfortable 2-0 victory for their opponents. This may be viewed as a positive for the Rebels, whose most recent victory against Taunton Town has propelled them to a stronger league position, 9 points clear of the relegation places.

The Romans have been managed by Jerry Gill since 2017, and the ex-professional player will be very pleased with how his side is performing this campaign. A former player for the Romans in his playing days, the 53-year-old Englishman has experience at both non-league level and in the football league, appearing for clubs such as Leyton Orient, Birmingham City, and Northampton Town, just to name a few. Gill is a player who knows Bath City inside and out, having appeared 164 times as a player.

Gill’s side has more than a few players who can dictate the events of a match this season, none more so than their number 9, Cody Cooke. Cooke has proven to be a dangerous goal scorer for the Romans this season, netting 11 goals so far this campaign over 26 games. Cooke’s highlight of the season so far was his hat-trick against Aveley in November last year. Having started his career with Penryn Athletic before playing for Truro City, the Cornish 30-year-old striker has had a challenging career that has seen him play professionally for Scottish top-flight side, St. Mirren, before dropping down the divisions to join Weymouth in 2020. He has been at Bath City since the summer of 2021 and has proven to be a reliable player in Gill’s setup in that time. Scott Davies’ men will need to be at their best to prevent Cooke from exploiting the Rebels' defence.

Kick-off is at 7:45 pm at Twerton Park in Bath. The game is available for fans to watch live on National League TV as well as the usual live commentary from Rebels Radio and live updates on our social media channels.
