Preview: Torquay United

A look ahead to Saturday's trip to Plainmoor.

09/02/24

Next up for Slough Town is a journey to the English Riviera, where they will face Torquay United, currently placed ninth in the league table, writes Freddie Gatrell.

In their previous encounter with United at Arbour Park earlier this season, a second-half brace from Bradley Ash led to a narrow 2-1 defeat for the Rebels. Since then, both teams have shown consistent improvement throughout the season. Torquay United have garnered just two more points than Slough Town this campaign, with a record of 14 wins, 3 draws, and 13 losses over 30 games, having played one match less than the Rebels. However, the Gulls have faced challenges in their recent form, suffering three consecutive defeats, including a heavy 4-0 loss against St. Albans City. Conceding 11 goals across those three matches presents an opportunity for Scott Davies' men to capitalise on. Torquay's solitary victory in this period came against then bottom-placed Dover Athletic, courtesy of a lone goal from Brett McGavin. Despite their recent struggles, the Devon-based outfit will undoubtedly be determined to bounce back, although Slough, buoyed by their recent strong victory against Weston-super-Mare, promise to provide a formidable challenge.

Gary Johnson, who has managed Torquay United since 2018, boasts a wealth of experience and success at National League level. Under his stewardship, Johnson's side achieved a record four-month unbeaten streak and reclaimed National League status at the end of the 2018/19 season. Despite narrowly missing out on promotion in the 2020/21 season, finishing second and losing the play-off final against Hartlepool United, Johnson's managerial acumen remains unquestionable. With over three decades of managerial experience across various EFL sides, including stints at Cambridge United, Bristol City, and Yeovil Town, along with international management experience with Latvia, Johnson's tactical expertise poses a significant challenge for Slough Town this Saturday at Plainmoor.

Torquay United boast a solid squad of players, with 27-year-old forward Bradley Ash likely to be a key figure in Saturday's clash. Ash, who began his career with Weston-super-Mare, has since showcased his talents at various clubs, including Barnsley, Boreham Wood, and Hereford. His 24 goals last season with Weymouth underscore his goal-scoring prowess, and since joining Torquay United in July 2023, he has found the net on seven occasions. However, Slough, under Scott Davies' management, will be well-prepared to recognise Ash's threat and will aim to secure a positive result.

Kick-off is scheduled for 3pm this Saturday at Plainmoor Stadium. For Rebels unable to attend the match, live commentary will be provided by Rebels Radio, along with live social media updates on the club's official channels.
