Preview: Bath City

A look at tomorrow's opponents, as the Romans visit Arbour Park.

The Rebels now look towards a monumental clash with fellow promotion-chasing rivals, Bath City, with both sides eager to retain all three points in what is an incredibly tight race for the playoffs, writes Freddie Gatrell.

Bath City, currently residing in 5th place in the table, will be a stern test for Scott Davies’ Rebels, as they were in our reverse fixture in early January, where a wonderful Scott Davies set piece condemned the Romans to a narrow 2-1 loss at Twerton Park.

Since our last clash, the Somerset-based outfit have been in a rich vein of form, with only their last two matches showing any signs of faltering: a draw against relegation-threatened Havant & Waterlooville and a defeat to fellow playoff hopefuls, Braintree Town in their last game on Tuesday evening.

Going into tomorrow’s clash, Jerry Gill’s men will be eager to return to winning ways and maintain their playoff position. For the Rebels, it will be more of the same, as we look to make it 19 matches unbeaten at home and carry on the unbeaten run since defeat at Yeovil Town at the end of January.

Managed by Jerry Gill since 2017, the ex-professional player will be very pleased with how his side is performing this campaign, despite recent results. An ex-player for the Romans in his playing days, the 53-year-old has experience at both non-league level and in the Football League, appearing for clubs such as Leyton Orient, Birmingham City, and Northampton Town, to name a few. Gill is a player who knows Bath City inside and out, having appeared 164 times as a player and will strive to use his experience to propel his side to success over the remainder of the season.

The key man for the visitors tomorrow will likely prove to be Tom Smith, with the midfielder recently netting his 50th goal for the club against Truro City earlier this month. Having started his professional career at Swindon Town, Smith has experience within the Football League as well as at National League level. After two separate loan spells with the Romans, Smith signed permanently in 2019 and has remained at the club ever since, with a short loan spell with Dagenham & Redbridge. The Romans' number 10 netted against Truro City recently and will need to be well marshalled to prevent him from further improving his goal tally for the campaign.

Kick-off is at 3pm tomorrow afternoon at Arbour Park. For those fans unable to attend tomorrow’s game, social media updates and live radio commentary courtesy of Rebels Radio will be available.
