A look ahead to tomorrow's game at 4th-placed Braintree Town.

08/03/24

The next test standing in the way of Slough Town is a clash with Braintree Town, a side in red-hot form sitting 4th in the league table, writes Freddie Gatrell.

In our last meeting earlier this season, the Rebels were comfortable winners at Arbour Park, with goals from Johnny Goddard, Nathan Minhas and Mickel Platt forcing the Essex-based side to leave empty-handed.

Since then, the Iron have seen a huge upturn in their form, with their current unbeaten run spanning 10 games since the beginning of January, including a streak of 7 victories in a row. This consistent form has seen Braintree rise up the standings, currently sitting in 4th place with 60 points over the course of 35 matches. Their overall form chart is certainly good reading for fans of the Iron, with 17 wins, 9 draws and 9 losses over their 35 matches. Tomorrow’s clash at Cressing Road will be a stern test for both sides, who will want to avoid any slip-ups in their pursuits of a play-off position.

Braintree Town manager, Angelo Harrop has proven to have what it takes at this level of management since taking over two seasons ago. Harrop, who joined the club from AFC Sudbury in May 2022, has already led his side to a play-off finish in his debut season, finishing the campaign in 7th place, accumulating 74 points in the process. Extending his contract earlier this season, Harrop will be hoping he can continue his side’s resurgent success and propel them back into the National League at the second time of asking.

Harrop’s side have demonstrated no issues finding the back of the net, with goals flowing freely all season. The danger-man for Saturday’s clash is undoubtably Aaron Blair, with the 23-year-old striker scoring goals at a regular rate in recent weeks, having scored 3 in 3, including the winner at fellow promotion-chasing Worthing.

Having spent much of his early career at Dagenham & Redbridge, the young striker was loaned out numerous times before signing permanently for Braintree in October last year. Blair has proven a success, having gone on to net 11 goals over 29 matches. Scott Davies’ defence, who are missing key man Temi Eweka through suspension, will have to be at their brilliant best to keep the forward at bay and prevent any improvements to this goalscoring record on Saturday.

The match will kick off at 3pm tomorrow, at Braintree Town’s Cressing Road stadium. For Rebels fans unable to attend the fixture, live commentary will be available courtesy of Rebels Radio as well as live match updates on all official club social media channels.
