Slough Town PALS carried their poor form from last month into the first couple of matches in April’s tournament at Oxford City, where a scoreless draw and a single goal defeat left them without a win in eight games and level on points with Milton Keynes Panthers, who were due up next with Slough having squandered a 16-point lead from before the winter break.
We took an early lead though striker Shawn Harding in an ill-tempered match, as an over physical opposition again tried to stop Slough from playing our passing game. Things looked bleak when we conceded two goals in quick succession but Shawn scored a late equaliser that kick-started our season.
We subsequently beat MK Ospreys 2-0 thanks to a solo effort from Shawn and a long-range effort by skipper Paul Wade, and with confidence returning, Shawn scored the only goal to defeat Northampton Town 1-0.
We ended this tournament with a second match against MK Panthers by which time we were playing like we had in the first half of the season, with a clinical strike from Shawn after a swift break, enough to secure a valuable win thanks to a crucial double save from goalkeeper Awais Khan at the end.
Everyone played better overall but David Meredith, Paul Wade & Scott Miles defended particularly well, Liam Watson and Brandon Sweeney worked tirelessly in midfield, and clearly Shawn had a fantastic day in front of goal netting five times. However, special mention goes to Raheem Choudhury who despite suffering an epileptic seizure in the second game, recovered to play in the final three matches.
With four points for a win in this league, securing the title remains in our own destiny with the final tournament to be held at Northampton Town on Sunday 21st May. Slough sit at the top of the league with 76 points, MK Panthers are in second place with 64 and Northampton Town are further back on 57 points.
