"Supersub" Moran Dodds scored twice in seven minutes after replacing brother Rowan, to put the Rebels into the second round of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup on Saturday at Wexham Park.

His brace of goals came as a vital tonic to remedy struggling Slough as the favourites looked like becoming giant killing victims to Spartan League Thatcham.

By rights Moran should have hit a hattrick after being given the ball to convert an 84th minute penalty but his spot kick was beaten out by 'keeper Mark Meagrow.

Thatcham deserve a lot of credit for their energetic performance and had their fitness been that bit greater they might have been able to hold on to their 36th minute lead which Nick Ingram grabbed after netting his own rebound shot, following a fine first save by Richard Teale.

Fortunately the game was rather more entertaining than the last five or six Slough performances and ended a disastrous catalogue of cup matches this term in which they have been knocked out by supposedly inferior opposition.

Both sides played an attacking game and Francis Araguez and Dave Alexander were unlucky not to hit the target in the first half. Slough, and particularly Rowan Dodds, fell victim continually to Thatcham's offside trap.

The second half was much more entertaining with four goals, two more Slough efforts disallowed, several bookings, and an attack by a man in his "80's" on referee John Boylen of Wokingham.

The attacker, a Mr. George Davies from Langley, launched his astonishing attack as players were clapped off the field and had to be restrained by supporters and a linesman.

Slough’s fitness began to take its toll on Thatcham culminating in a 63rd minute equaliser when Alexander supplied Rowan Dodds with the ammunition to cannon them back into the game slipping the ball coolly around the advancing 'keeper.

Soon after came the deadly double strike from brother Moran, who had replaced the injured Rowan, as he took only four minutes to get on the score sheet when he knocked home a flick on from Devon Petty to put the Rebels ahead.

In the 82nd minute Moran Dodds sealed the issue when Petty again delivered the vital pass to the "supersub" who headed home beautifully.

Two minutes later Moran missed his penalty and then in the 89th minute Colin Upton raised Thatcham's hopes when he chipped past 'keeper Teals for a fine goal.

If new signing Robbie Holland hadn't pulled down Chris Chard, who had a fine game on the Thatcham left wing, when he was clean through earlier in the half, the outcome of the game might have been very different.

However, the Slough supporters will also look back on the second half disallowed efforts of Rowan Dodds and Keith White, which for reasons known only to himself Mr. Boylen decided to rule out.

Had these goals been given it could have resulted in a much more comfortable win for the Rebels but, at the end of the day "supersub" Moran Dodds came to the rescue and gave Slough a second round tie away to Aylesbury United.
