Injury-hit Slough Town saw Maidenhead United strike twice in the closing stages of the game to secure victory against the Rebels in an entertaining pre-season friendly at York Road.

Starting the game with only two outfield players who played in the club’s play-off final against Kettering Town in Ryan Parsons and James Dobson playing in their natural positions it was of no surprise that the home side took control of the match early on.

They forced goalkeeper Jake Somerville into action minutes into the game when he saved well with his legs to deny Dave Tarpey. Then soon after Danny Green saw an effort go just wide of the post.

The Rebels though who were without ten first-team players and five players starting the first-half that were yet to make a competitive first-team appearance for the club soon began to grow in confidence with new signing Luke Knight volleying over left-footed from the edge of the area.

In the second-half the away side started well and equalised within minutes of the restart when Knight chipped-in from close range to level the scores.

It was the Rebels who were now kicking downhill that began to look more dangerous. They were close to going ahead when Reece Yorke climbed highest to reach a James Dobson corner only to see his effort clawed away by Maidenhead’s goalkeeper.

Slough did go-ahead though midway through the half when the influential Knight charged down a clearance allowing substitute Jonnie Dyer - who was not expected to take any part in the game due to injury the chance to hit a superb shot into the roof of the net with the outside of his right-foot.

The patched-up Rebels continued to look in control of the half, but with little time remaining the Magpies struck twice in the closing stages to force a win on the day they opened their impressive new stand.

They equalised when Jonathan Hippolyte was fouled in the box with a penalty awarded. Ashley Nicholls sent Somerville the wrong way from the spot to equalise. Then with minutes remaining they grabbed a derby victory when Lanre Azeez hit the ball into the net from close range.

Although the match ended in defeat for the Rebels with so many players missing, players playing out of position and players new to the side there were far more positives than negatives for Jon Underwood & Neil Baker to take from the match.
