The United started full of confidence and soon had the homesters in trouble, and after ten minutes Jones headed an excellent goal from a pass from Fisher. This goal shook the St. Albans defence and they conceded another within five minutes, Mackenzie having beaten Stratton with a fine shot.

The homesters soon recovered from this early setback: and play became more even and towards half-time it was Slough's defence that were tested to their fullest extent. They too went down under pressure, and Dear scored the Saints first with a shot that surprised the whole defence – no one moved to stop it. Straight from the kick-off Pipe went through and again got the Slough defence off guard, to equalise for the homesters.

After half-time both teams tried hard for further points, and a draw seemed almost certain when with 10 minutes to go Slough played terrific football and Jones sent Mackenzie through the middle to score a magnificent goal.

Another minute and Mackenzie again got through and beat the home defence, only to have his legs kicked away from under him when about to shoot. The game was held up while he received attention - meanwhile the referee had placed the ball in the penalty spot and Mackenzie scored the United's fourth goal.

Little time was left now for either team to do anything of note, and Slough came away deservedly winners of a grand game.
