Slough Town’s run of three Isthmian League victories came to an abrupt halt at Boreham Wood on Saturday when they were beaten by a John Beyer own goal.

The Slough captain, making his return to the team after missing the midweek win at Wycombe through injury, scored the only goal with just ten minutes left.

He lobbed a mishit pass back to Richard Teale and could only watch as the keeper stumbled in a vain attempt to reach it and the ball landed in the net. It decided the result in a match which Slough should have won comfortably.

They dominated the match for long periods and Teale had hardly a serious save to make in the entire 90 minutes. Ian Cooke and Alan Gane soon took control in midfield and Barry Metcalfe headed just wide from a superb Cooke cross after 17 minutes.

Both Paul Lee and Dave Russell bewildered the Boreham Wood defenders with their wing trickery but Slough failed to turn their superiority into goals.

Turl, who looked understandably uneasy in midfield early on, volleyed over the bar and forced Steve Waller to make a fine save midway through the second half.

Lee saw his shot strike the right hand post and rebound into the net off defender Kevin Hill, but the linesman had already flagged and the 'goal' was disallowed for offside.

A drive from Russell smashed into the side-netting but Slough looked like a beaten side as soon as Beyer scored that tragic own goal.

Slough have scored only six times in seven matches and against Boreham Wood they definitely missed the goal power of the injured Mick Kiely, and Peter Feely, who is in Hong Kong. Metcalfe worked hard but he lacks the sharpness and pace that Slough needed in attack.
