Lynch hat-trick knocks out Rebels

Stortford progressed to a Third Round tie against Middlesbrough after winning 4-1 at Wexham Park.

Whilst Millwall fell in the previous round, Stortford progressed to a Third Round tie against Middlesbrough for the first time in their history.

Stortford were denied in the first half by some great goalkeeping from Kevin Mitchell, a fine save from Lyndon Lynch early on setting the scene.

They took the lead early in the second half. Lynch played the ball through, and a poor back pass was seized upon by Sullivan, who slid in to try and power the ball past Mitchell, but Lynch converted the loose ball. Slough were adamant the goalkeeper had been fouled in what was a tough challenge from Sullivan.

Slough equalised in the 74th minute as Joe Maloney crossed in for Dylan Evans to power a header into the bottom corner.

Stortford regained the lead with a fine goal. Terry Sullivan, perhaps the classiest player on the pitch, fed Ian Smith, who in turn crossed in for the onrushing Lynch to power a header past Mitchell.

Just minutes later, Sullivan took advantage of a tiring Slough again, this time beating his man on the left and crossing in for Joe Simmons to fire a volley past Mitchell.

Lynch completed his hat-trick in the dying minutes. Smith’s deep free kick fell to the 30- year-old number eight, whose mishit effort trickled past Mitchell again.
