Slough came away from Gander Green Lane, Sutton, well satisfied with a point from their opening Isthmian League game of the season, but also with the knowledge that they so nearly brought off outright victory.
Sutton were not in the hunt in the first half concentrating on defence, at which it must be admitted they did extremely well. Somers gave Slough the lead after the interval but in the closing stages Sutton scrambled a goal to equalise.
Slough had their new signing, Cooke from Wimbledon, on view and a very good impression did he create, while Underwood looked fit and back to his old self after the close season operation for his shoulder trouble.
Reardon was an absentee due to a suspension earned at the end of last season. Sutton relied mainly on last season’s stalwarts but Hill, the former Slough man who went to Woking last season was in their ranks.
The Rebels had quite a strong contingent of supporters and what they saw in the first half must have pleased them for Slough built up a succession of attacks and Russell, Davies, Lee, and Somers all made good scoring attempts without achieving the final success. Sutton seldom looked dangerous and Porter had a very comfortable first half.
Slough speeded up their game at the commencement of the second half and following some very fast flowing football which had the United defence under heavy pressure, Somers scored.
As the game progressed Slough's attack faded a little and for the first time Porter and his co-defenders were called upon to meet serious challenges, but it was not until twelve minutes from the end that they conceded the goal.
Hill fired in a cannonball kind of shot which Porter did well to get away for a corner. From the flag kick there was a goalmouth scrimmage and Sutton somehow managed to scramble the ball over the line. In the second half Poynter, the former Slough schoolboy player, came on for Cruse and gave another very promising display.
