Slough were knocked out of the FA Trophy by Cheshire League champions, Winsford by the only goal, at Winsford, on Wednesday evening before a crowd of 800 which included a coach load of Rebel fans who made the long trip North.

Slough could not complain at the result, they never touched their true form and it was only another fine display by Porter in goal which kept the score down to one.

Slough had Reardon, Underwood and Russell all back and fielded their full strength but their hopes of success melted just as quickly as did the flurry of snow which swept the ground a few minutes before the kick-off.

It was Winford's first game for nearly three weeks but from the start they were the more dangerous combination and took only nine minutes to go into the lead.

The attack was built up by Bebbington who then put Smith, their top goal scorer, away and he beat Porter with a superb shot delivered from 15 yards range.

The Slough defence had been split wide open by the move and these two Winsford men caused the visitors a lot of trouble all through the match. Smith did get the ball past Porter a second time but was ruled offside.

At the other end Friend, Clarke, the Winsford keeper, Russell and Lee all tested but at no time did Slough really put their game together as we know they can.

Too often the high ball was sent down the middle by a little sense of direction and the worried Town rearguard with front runners were left to build up their own attacks.

The second half was very much a repeat of the first with Winsford never relaxing their mid-field grip and Bebbington, the former Stoke player always outstanding as their sweeper.

As the minutes ticked away Slough tried desperately hard to achieve the breakthrough and twice they had the ball within inches of the goal line but could not get the all-important touch.

To sum up, it was just not Slough's night and so Winsford go on to meet either Bangor or Nuneaton on the path to Wembley.
