Slough Town signed off season 2011/12 with a win in difficult playing conditions at Woodford United.

Following disappointment in the playoff semi-final at Holloways Park in midweek, this twice-postponed match was a chance for Steve Bateman's side to sign off with a win, and the Rebels did so thanks to second-half goals from Chris Herron and then Danny Murphy five minutes later.

Youth team goalkeeper James Hawtree was handed a senior debut and put in an assured performance, beaten only by a piledriver close to the end of the match.

The game also saw debuts handed to Ben Sturgess and another youth team product, Joe Blount, from the bench for the second half.

A very heavy muddy pitch awaited the dejected Slough players, following defeat against Beaconsfield the previous Thursday, and in a first half of few chances, Slough were largely on top, with Ben Abbey doing well to trap the ball and lay off to Paul Coyne to fire the first effort over.

Despite the conditions, Slough tried their best to play football on it, but neither side could trouble the goalkeepers before half time.

But with 48 minutes played, good build up play saw Sean Sonner feed Chris Herron, who advanced into the box and blasted past Matt Finlay to open the scoring.

Just five minutes later, Sonner chipped a ball over to Murphy, who controlled and fired low and hard past Finlay at his near post.

Slough substitute Joe Blount looked lively on his debut, and was unlucky not to pick out Abbey with a ball across the face of goal, before Nathan Stewart fired an effort over for Woodford.

James Hawtree, despite not having much to do throughout, looked steady when called upon, and he held a Woodford free kick from 25 yards. On the one occasion he looked hesitant, Alex Brown came to the rescue to head a Woodford free kick behind for a corner.

Ben Abbey could have added a third but nodded an effort at Finlay after Burnell headed across goal, and Brown headed a corner just wide.

Woodford did manage to notch a consolation goal three minutes from time and spoil Hawtree's debut slightly. The hosts worked the ball to substitute Daniel Stewart who blasted high into the top corner, giving the keeper no chance.
