The Rebels saw their cup hopes for the season extinguished for good when they exited their final competition - the Spalding League Cup at Rockingham Road on Tuesday night.

Defeat also represented the third time this season Slough have failed to get the better of Kettering, though in truth both sides treated the game as little more than a training session.

Forwards Ansil Bushay and Ross Pickett had enough chances to have sewn things up by half-time as the Poppies defence looked as vulnerable as it had on Saturday, but once Pope had opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a shot through a forest of legs following a right-wing corner, there was only going to be one result.

As early as the second minute, Trevor Baron squandered a fine opportunity by heading meekly over the bar from Garfield Blackman's free-kick, and Pickett was then left in space seven yards out but shot straight at Shoemake.

Chuck Moussaddik was forced into action to stop Pope on 27 minutes and the dangerous Gynn afterwards, before a quick break ended with Mark West being bundled over in the box but Justified penalty claims being waved away.

The chances continued after the break; Bushay could not reach the goal after a poor back pass left Shoemake exposed; Baron caused panic when he advanced for Mark Fiore's corner and Steve Bateman later saw a header cannon off a post with the 'keeper beaten.

But in between, the Poppies managed one crucial strike - a Hayworth break down the right saw a cross find its way to Harmon, who beat Moussaddik from close range.

Without a league win in a month and a cup dream to chase, Dave Russell must be under considerable pressure right now. This will not have helped.
