Slough Town are the Athenian League champions for the second season running, they made sure of the title when they trounced Cheshunt to the tune of four clear goals on Monday evening.

This fine performance followed Saturday's 2-0 win at Wembley and now the results of tonight's final league match of the season against Dagenham at Slough can make no difference to the championship.

Slough away Athenian League fixture against Wembley brought the expected victory for Slough, but not in the easy way expected. Wembley played some fine football and at no time allowed the title holders to let up. It was difficult to realise that the two teams were from opposite ends of the league. Victory for Slough put them on top of the league table for the first time in many weeks, Tilbury’s hopes of taking the title disappeared and the title race reduced to two, Slough and Dagenham, with Slough needing just one point from two games to clinch the championship.

The only absentee from Slough's full strength side was Terry Reardon; a nagging rib injury kept him out and Jamieson came in to replace him. Perhaps Slough were at fault for underestimating the opposition; the Wembley Lions were out to show that they were no walkover, but a goal in each half, the first from Gaine, the second from Day, settled the game that did not really rise to any great heights.

The first half saw Slough much in control without really stretching themselves. Dave Reid, the home number 9, had to leave the field within minutes of the start and substitute Bull took over. The Lions gave of their best but it was Slough who went ahead after 33 minutes when D'Arcy flighted a free kick to the far post for Gaine to head home.

Wembley were not dismayed and came close on a couple of occasions with lan Mills their best forward.

After the break Slough got well on top but did not look like scoring and with only one goal to pull back the home side kept driving forward but the experienced Slough players were not going to lose the much needed points and the matter was settled in the 80th minute when Slough were awarded a free kick on the edge of the Wembley penalty area; the wall waited the familiar Slough Day Chatterton move but instead Day lofted the ball over the defenders and into the corner of the net and the two points were assured.
