Slough were knocked out of the Puma Cup on Tuesday evening in a dull and uneventful match.

Two goals in the second half scored by ex-Slough Town player Andy Sayer put paid to the Rebels chances in a match in which they should have done well. But Slough never got into a game that saw very few chances and was played mostly in the middle of the park.

With Walton's manager Laurie Craker resigning following the team's dismal run of form culminating in Saturday's 6-1 defeat by Purfleet, Slough might have expected a confidence booster prior to their important league games coming up. But it was Walton who seized on errors by Town to give caretaker manager Mark Hill a lift and they go through to the next round.

The first half was a negative affair from either side with little created in the box. One solo effort from Deaner could have brought a reward when the striker turned and hit a thunderbolt from 30 yards but he was unlucky to see it hit the crossbar and go out.

Slough, with assistant Steve Browne in charge, made a change early in the second half when he took off Paul Hardyman and brought on Mark Fiore and switched his original 4-4-2 line-up around.

But it was Walton who made the breakthrough on 66 minutes after Slough had several chances to clear a ball but dithered and Sayer pounced on the opportunity to smack the ball home from ten yards out.

The game continued at a ponderous pace until a fine individual run from Walton's Garfield Blackman on 85 minutes took him 50 yards with the ball at his feet until he was sandwiched in Slough's penalty area. Sayer made no mistake from the spot.

The formation that Town used left Deaner virtually up front on his own and again the lack of good crosses to make goal scoring opportunities was a crucial factor.

The players will be training hard on Saturday to sharpen them up for the games ahead but this defeat will have been a blow to their confidence.
