Three first-half goals helped Slough on the way to victory over a youthful Uxbridge side in the Second Round of the Red Insure Cup.

Johnnie Dyer, after his hat-trick on Saturday, opened the scoring on 7 minutes with another header – this time nodding in a deflected cross at the back post.

Sixteen-year-old Matt Bonnett, making his debut for the Rebels, had a fine game, and showed his promise early on by tipping over shots from Alfie Barratt and then Ola Kukoyi shortly after. Bonnett then comfortably held a fiercely-struck shot from Jack Todd.

Slough doubled their lead on 29 minutes as a well-worked corner routine paid dividends, with Adam Foulser heading in Darren Wheeler’s corner.

Ollie Burgess almost made it three, but his free kick hit the outside of the post. Burgess would leave the field shortly after with an injury, to be replaced by Wes Harrison, who partnered Foulser at the back.

But Slough opened Uxbridge up again on 32 minutes, and a cross from Dyer on the right was touched in by Scott Harris to give the Rebels a comfortable lead.

Wheeler, switching from the left wing to the right, first saw a free kick well saved by Rourke Pickford, before finding himself with space to run into and fire in a screamer from distance, but the ball rebounded back off a post.

Scott Harris almost added a superb third before half time as he controlled Wheeler’s lofted pass superbly, but could not control his volley, sending the ball well over.

After being punished in the first half, Uxbridge came into the game in the second, and Oushor should have pulled one back, but put the ball wide when played one on one with Bonnett. But Bonnett was beaten in the 57th minute, as Danny Julienne, one of the more experienced Uxbridge players in the side, turned and finished smartly from a Todd cross.

The young Slough keeper pulled off a wonderful save from Kukoyi, as he turned away a fierce strike from just inside the penalty area. Kevin Warner then had a volley headed off the line by Jamie McClurg as Uxbridge looked for a second.

Slough had the chance to kill the game off when they were awarded a spot-kick – but Eddie Smith put the ball wide from 12 yards after being tripped in the box by Pickford.

In the closing stages, Uxbridge left-back Harry Stannett was dismissed for comments made to the officials, and Slough punished the visitors immediately. Wheeler, who had been fouled by Stannett, whipped in the free kick, and Scott Harris headed his second goal of the night into the bottom corner.

Bonnett again impressed by making a smart low save from Todd. The young stopper's performance was a real positive, along with another solid showing from young midfielder Seb Castello.

Slough added further gloss to the result in the final minute as Wheeler, again impressive in laying on goals, this time got his name on the score sheet as he whipped a superb free kick into the top corner, giving Pickford no chance.
