Slough Town produced another of their Jekyll and Hyde performances at the Croydon Sports arena when they defeated Croydon Amateurs by 3-2.

The first-half goals by Gains, Chatterton and Day were the result of the brand of football Slough supporters have been waiting for all season. Alas, in the second half Slough relaxed and allowed Croydon to pull back a couple of goals although the odds against the Surrey side squaring the account always looked formidable.

Slough had Reid wearing the number eight jersey while Gains took over the number 10 spot and Anthony took Giggle's place with Tottman the substitute.

The game was only one minute old when Slough swept into the lead. A mix-up between the defenders and the Croydon keeper saw Gains pounce on a bad back pass and slip the ball into the net.

Continued pressure for five minutes resulted in a second Slough goal - a free kick from D'Arcy was played back by Mead for Chatterton to knock home.

Two corners were gained by the home side in the 19th was all they had to show for their endeavour minute, but this and Slough's polished football had its reward when they scored an excellent goal in the 34th minute. A 30-yard free kick from D'Arcy was played back by Gains to Reardon who beat three men before pushing the ball into the path of the oncoming Day who hammered it hard and low into the net.

Two minutes later Chatterton was just with a volley, and in the 41st minute, from a Slough corner, Mead's header was handled on the Croydon goal-line by Alf D'Arcy.

In the 45th minute Bruce had Croydon's first real chance but miskicked. Within a minute of the start of the second half Read was injured and Gains headed just wide from an Eaton cross.

In the 49th minute, Tottman came on for the limping Read, and Slough began to surrender their superiority. In the 59th minute the home side scored one goal back when Donaldson outran the Slough defence and lobbed the ball over the advancing Wolstenholme.

After this Slough missed chance after chance; Chatterton having a shot blocked on the line. Anthony lobbing over an empty goal, Day mis-kicking in front of an empty goal from a D'Arcy free and Eaton hitting the crossbar. Until in the 82nd minute Croydon grabbed their second shot from Savage rebounded off a Slough defender and Prime was on hand to thrash the ball home. The final minutes were very even but the D'Arcy/Mead duo made sure of the points.
