A major upset in Athenian League form is probably the kindest comment one can make about the result of Slough's visit to Aveley. Never before have the Essex side beaten Slough, but on previous meetings between the teams Slough put a little more effort than they did on this occasion. So the champions now find themselves knocked off the top of the league table for the first time for months.

On a cheerless afternoon the football produced did nothing for anyone to enthuse about and the crowd could not raise as much noise as the players on the pitch. attempts at goal were few and far between and it was not until just after the hour that the goal of the match was scored, and, in keeping with the general run of the game, it was an own goal, although Stewart Jamieson was one of the few players who did himself credit and was unlucky that his attempt at clearing the ball resulted in his putting it into his own net.

To add to the general gloom of the day, Slough's already small squad was depleted even further when Micky O’Sullivan was injured in the final minutes and had to be taken off suffering from a broken nose, an injury sustained in a midfield clash that resulted in stitches being inserted later in the day at Wexham Park Hospital.

The game opened in a manner fitting the conditions, little excitement, with Slough very capable at the-back and in midfield but very lacking at the front; after end-to-end play, Walder forced a fine save from Wolstenholme in the 21st minute, the ball being fingered over for a corner.

In the 22nd, an Aveley free-kick was scrambled away but that was all the excitement of the first half. After the interval it was the clever running of Stewart Jamieson, playing at full-back in the absence of the suspended Ray Eaton, that caught the eye, but a complete lack of punch at the front could not make anything of the chances that Jamieson made.

With a goal at either end looking unlikely, it came as a surprise when the ball entered the Slough net after 62 minutes. A clever run by Newman saw him beat Mead and D'Arcy, but his shot struck the upright only for the retreating Jamieson to run the ball into his own net.

Slough slowly got back into the game and looked as though they might salvage a point, but under pressure the home defence proved good enough, although centre half Cawte was booked for a late tackle in the 76th minute and was given his marching orders in the 87h for showing dissent.

In these minutes of Slough pressure O'Sullivan received his injury, and in the dying minutes Anthony set up Chatterton, after some very clever work, only for the big striker to miss the chance.
