Maidenhead United crashed to their heaviest and most humiliating defeat of the season at the Dolphin ground on Wednesday night in a match which was almost unbelievably one-sided. They conceded six goals, could have lost 10, and finished a thoroughly dispirited side.

Even the Slough players seemed moved to compassion at the sight of the dispirited Maidenhead side, and after scoring four goals in 26 minutes, relaxed their grip and added only another two in the remaining hour.

It was not an equal contest, and only three players, Micky Shepherd, Dennis Montague and Steve Rogers emerged with any credit from the encounter.

It was the biggest defeat Maidenhead have experienced at Slough for several years, and was so demoralising that it will be some time before this team recovers from its effects.

The goal avalanche started in the sixth minute, Ray Eaton beat Malcolm Pike on the right wing and centred the ball for Mick Chatterton to score with a diving header.

Although shocked by this goal, Maidenhead at that stage, were still showing some signs of coordination. In the 12th minute Shepherd initiated a move which split the Slough defence wide open and Tommy James succeeded in getting the ball into the net only to be judged offside.

The next 15 minutes were a complete nightmare for Maidenhead. Chatterton added his second goal in the 15th minute, cracking the ball on the volley through a crowd of players in the goalmouth.
Six minutes later goalkeeper Geoff Dobner made a fine save from a shot by Roger Day, but dropped the ball and left winger Ken Gain lunged forward to steer it into the net.

The first half scoring spree ended when Keith Mead climbed high to meet a curling cross from Alf D'Arcy and headed the ball past Dobner into the net. The rest of the half, and indeed the rest of the game, proved an anti-climax. Slough relaxed and although well on top, spoiled many good moves by over collaboration.

They increased their lead through Geoff Anthony in the 65th minute, and two minutes later, Malcolm Kemp headed in Maidenhead's reply following a Graham Cooper free kick.

It was Cooper's first appearance since being disciplined by manager Maurice Williams four weeks ago. Although he tried hard, he was obviously lacking in match fitness. Within minutes of Kemp's goal. Maidenhead lost their star player Shepherd, who limped off with an injured ankle.

Dobner brought off five fine saves but was beaten by a 25-yard. shot from D'Arcy in the 75th. minute. Three more shots were blocked on the line before the debacle ended.
