Athenian League Cup
Defending Athenian League Cup holders Slough had little difficulty in moving into the semi-finals of this season's competition where they will meet their old rivals Maidenhead United. This three-goal win was Slough's biggest victory since the end of December and while it was a very decisive success the standard of football was anything but entertaining. The three goals were scored by Reardon, Gain and Reid.
In a one-sided encounter Slough maintained constant. pressure on a disappointing side. So much were Slough in charge they amassed 14 corners to their visitors' one.
Slough opened with the wind in their favour and the pattern. of the game was immediate, Slough pushing forward and the visitors hoping to break away when Slough were stretched, Chatterton had the first attempt at goal but his header went over the bar, in the 8th minute a Slough free kick to the right of the goal was headed out by the packed Cheshunt defence to Reardon who cleverly controlled the ball before volleying a shot through the defence but the keeper somehow managed to throw himself across the goal and finger the ball around the upright for a corner.
Slough gained three further corners during the next two minutes and it was not until the 16th that Wolstenholme became involved in the play.
In the 20th Cheshunt had their first real attempt at goal when Twigg raced away but his shot was parried by Wolstenholme and cleared.
Following two further comers to Slough in the 26th minute Cheshunt made their best move of the match when Donahue passed the ball inside to Cerasili and the latter's shot was blocked by Wolstenholme's legs.
On the half-hour O'Sullivan raced clear of the static Cheshunt defence but was chopped down by Berryman whose action was suitably noted by the referee in his little black book.
With half-time approaching, a goal looked unlikely but in the 41st Reardon lobbed a free kick into the Cheshunt goalmouth, Day played the ball back to Caine who's shot was blocked but Reardon following volleyed the ball into the back of the net to give Slough an interval lead.
The second half was only six minutes old when Slough gained their 10th corner of the match and Day's kick was headed home by lan Reid to make it 2-0.
In the 63rd the 11th corner was headed goalwards by Mead, but cleared off the line, Slough then proceeded to make the game a steady procession towards the Cheshunt goal with the ball rarely getting into the Slough half and the visitors substitution of Lawrence for Twigg in the 78th made no difference at all.
The scoreline was completed in the 85th minute again from a dead ball situation, Reid took the free kick and Gain outjumped the defence to head home the third goal.
