Slough Town like a team with a shadow over them and it was without doubt the shadow of Wembley. Players were reluctant to risk injury with only days between them and their appearance on the turf of the most famous stadium in the world. Croydon were delighted to be allowed to escape with a point which helped them to keep clear of the bottom of 'the table.
Slough were given a big ovation when they came out in their new Wembley strip and very smart they looked, it was a pity their play was not as bright as their colours.
Croydon are far from a "push over" for any team and on Saturday with Slough taking it at half speed they gained confidence as the game dragged on. The Slough front runners put in plenty of running but their finishing lacked the determination and sparkle we saw at Redhill.
Croydon concentrated on defence in the early stages but grew bolder as the minutes ticked away and from one or two sudden breaks they looked capable of giving the Rebels a real shock. Fortunately the Slough defence was in better form than the attack and all the Croydon attacks were contained.
The nearest Croydon came to a goal was in the 49th minute when Childs forced a fine save from Wolstenholme but after this it was Slough who again took control. D'Arcy came on for Swadling in the 60th minute and played a midfield role but the goals just would not come. Chatterton in the 70th saw the ball again go the wrong side of the upright, five minutes later D'Arcy forced Rogers to bring off yet another fine save but after this it was the visitors who got more into the game.
It was fitting that the final whistle should come without a goal being scored for neither side deserved more than a point from a game that was lacking in almost every aspect.
